Domestic violence doesn't just cost lives. It directly costs survivors thousands in out-of-pocket expenses and Florida taxpayers billions each year. This is not abstract. Survivors carry these burdens long after the violence ends. Many of these costs block access to protection, stability, and healing.

Out-of-Pocket Survivor Costs:

- Incident causing disability costs to survivors are on average an additional $17,653 PER YEAR. Basic accessibility needs, medical, equipment, necessity modifications for daily life keep survivors financially shattered. It takes on average 2.7 years to be approved for Social Security Disability.
- The Crime Victims Protection Fund pays on average $514 for a victim's claim once. If the Victim loses a limb from the crime, the one-time average is $6,938.
- HLMS Survivors lose an average of 26 days of work per year, unpaid, or $5,616. Often the survivor faces systematic requirements like investigations, court appearances, depositions, protection paperwork and filings. Many survivors lose their jobs entirely.
- On average survivors spend $2,970 per year in necessary personal security items like home security cameras, body protection, locks and service fees to stay untraceable.
Unlike their abusers, victim-survivor's legal fees are not provided by public services. On average, a survivor has Out-of-Pocket legal fees of $6,230.
